February Dinner Presentation: Approaching Net Zero

Our February dinner program was an exploration of how schools can wean themselves from fossil fuels through solar and geothermal, power generation, HVAC innovations, and energy and water conservation. The presentation ““Approaching Net Zero: Strategies for Earth Friendly Schools” was a collaborative effort by Matt Lane, McGranahan Architects; Rebecca Baibak, Integrus Architecture; Philip Riedel, NAC|Architecture & Anjali Grant, Mahlum. September 17th - School Tour & Dinner Meeting

This month we will tour Garfield High School in the Seattle School District, beginning at 4pm. For our Cocktail "Hour" between 5:00 - 6:30pm we will gather at the Wing Luke Asian Museum. Dinner will be across the street at The Four Seas Restaurant with a family-style Chinese buffet at a cost of $35, or $40 without a reservation. Special $25 rate for all State and School District Representatives. 

Our program will be: "Get Involved: Volunteer Opportunities for 2009-2010". Be a part of planning next year’s conference, or the School of the Future Design Competition. Afterwords, try your hand at singing in ‘CEFP-Idol’ at the Bush Gardens Lounge. Come just to watch or help to ‘judge’ your fellow cefpi singers!

June Dinner Meeting Presentation - Impressions from Helsinki

We were treated to a special presentation by representatives of a group who traveled to an international conference conducted by the American Institute of Architects' Committee on Architecture for Education. The conference was entitled "Schools in a Flat World"; held in Helsinki, Finland from September 10‐13, 2008.

Our distinguished panel of presenters included:

Greg Stack, NAC Architecture

Craig Mason, DLR Group

They shared their experiences, impressions and thoughts with us. We had a great dialog after the presentation comparing societies and the impact on learning in each. We came away dispelling some myths and gaining appreciation for the approach they are taking with education in Finland. The presentation used by the panel can be downloaded here. Our dinner program is "Impressions from Finland: a panel discussion featuring local architects that attended the 2008 AIA CAE Conference in Helsinki - highlighting the Finnish Educational Vision, Pedegogy, Culture and Beauty.

2009 Annual School Tour

The wheels are in motion for our 2009 Council of Education Facilities Planners International Annual School Tour.  

 

Come aboard our luxurious tour bus for an all day excursion, on Friday May 8th, as we visit four schools around the south sound.

These schools have been selected, not merely for their architectural interest, but also because they contribute to learning in some interesting ways.

We’ll be touring The Federal Way Public Academy, a remodel in previously light-industrial space; The Lakeview Hope Academy and its adjacent Boys and Girls Club, which demonstrate community relationships; Pioneer Middle School which makes use of its sustainable features as educational tools; and Glacier View Junior High; an energetic design on an emerging educational campus.

Gordon Beck at our March Chapter Meeting
