Thanks for everyone who organized the CEFPI Conference Golf Tournament in Spokane. We had a great time. You will see from the photos that we had a fair amount of time to socialize before golfing. Our start was delayed due to ice on the course. No problem for us.

SEMINAR TITLE: Advancing Technologies for Creating High Performance Schools

High Performance Schools facilitate superior learning environments for students and staff while substantially reducing the impact on our environment. How do we really know what the effects are on environmental quality as well as student and teacher performance? Considering the numerous benefits they provide, why don’t we see construction of more high-performance facilities? This program will cover the methods and advancing technologies available to help you create and maintain High Performance Schools.

Program Outline:
1) Benefits of High Performance Schools: What are the real world benefits that school districts actually attain? What are the qualitative vs. quantitative impacts on the end user? How do we measure the improvements in environmental quality? How do these changes really affect the performance of students and teachers?
2) Procurement Methodologies: What are the contract vehicles and methods available to achieve HPS?
3) Total Cost of Ownership Analysis: How is life cycle cost analysis integrated into the High Performance School process? What are the true benefits to assessing costs over the life of the building vs. merely first cost?
4) Building Technologies: How can building technologies contribute to the creation of High Performance Schools? How can school districts successfully manage these increasingly complex systems? How can these technologies help maintain the sustainability of a school?

Conference Seminar: BIM for All and All for BIM

SEMINAR TITLE: BIM for All and All for BIM
TIME SLOT: Friday afternoon, May 2, 1:45 – 3:00pm and 3:15 – 4:30pm

BIM is one of the new buzzwords in the industry. However, the lifecycle portion of the process has largely been ignored. This seminar will enlighten both building owners and design teams on the tools and process for total building lifecycle management using a virtual model and tools to access the data stored in the model.

Owners and designers will better understand how to interact as a team and what benefits are available by using a Building Lifecycle process including: Sustainability, reduced first and lifecycle cost, improved coordination and long-term maintenance. Each discipline is represented and can reflect on their experiences using a virtual process and help shed light on the benefits and pitfalls to avoid.

This presentation will explore the Building Lifecycle cost using local case studies as well as national statistics from the National Building Information Standard, the US General Services Administration and the buildingSMART alliance, leaders in Building Information Modeling revolution. The panel includes local professionals who are experienced in BIM.

Program Outline:
1. Introduction (What is BIM?, What is BLM?)
2. Who is doing BIM (GSA, Leading AEC Firms, Leading Contractors)
3. Why BIM / BLM (Improved Visualization for Team, Reduced errors through better coordination, Early analysis for Energy program design cost, Reduced first cost due to earlier analysis, Reduced lifecycle cost due to improved building management/sustainability, Ability for pre-fabrication to reduce waste and cost, Future electronic code compliance)
4. BIM/BLM and IPD (Design teams truly integrated as a team, Interoperability a necessity, Reducing “Silos” of Information)
5. Sounds Great. How do I accomplish this? (Starts with a vision and goals, What do I expect from my team?, Where do I go for resources)
6. Case Studies (Eastgate Elementary School, Onuma BIM Storm LA and New Orleans)
7. Conclusion (BIM is the second most popular thing on the industry mind after sustainability, There are many firms available to assist with BIM adoption, BIM compliments the sustainability efforts of design team, The amount of money to be saved is huge, Owners have the most to gain in this environment)

A discussion of what a 50 year school building is, and the design, planning and funding considerations required to build them from Bond Issue to Final Acceptance. Thoughts from the perspectives of a School District Facilities Director, Architect and Cost Estimator, followed by an open forum group discussion.

Conference Seminar: Kids, Virtual Games, and Learning

SEMINAR TITLE: Kids, Virtual Games, and Learning
TIME SLOT: Friday afternoon, May 2, 3:15 – 4:30pm

Not only are toy manufacturers reaping the benefits of video games and virtual worlds, the educational field is now realizing its own benefits. Brain researchers have long studied the impact of visual stimuli on humans to understand cognitive capability. Educators have begun to accept the cognitive development from playing games that require pattern recognition, eye and mouse coordination, development of informational hierarchies, and social interaction from games and on-line live play. Virtual worlds and social networks are entering their own arena of respectability.

This seminar will explore the history and genres of video games, boy’s games and learning in comparison to girl’s games, the proliferation of virtual worlds and social networks for kids along with a discussion of some of the recent initiatives incorporating digital media and games into learning, and the international involvement of educators in gaming for educational benefit.

Conference Seminar: The Early Learning Advantage

SEMINAR TITLE: The Early Learning Advantage - Should Public Education Begin at Birth?
TIME SLOT: Friday afternoon, May 2, 1:45 – 3:00pm

In the state of Washington, more than half our children enter kindergarten without the skills they need to succeed in school. Research shows that poverty in early childhood has long-lasting negative consequences for cognitive development and academic outcomes. Providing advanced early childhood education to children living in poverty improves their chance for long-term academic success and gives them an opportunity to create a cycle of success.

With public and private partners—including Thrive by Five: The Washington Early Learning Fund, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Puget Sound Educational Service District, and others – the Greenbridge Early Learning Center is being designed as a “Center of Excellence” devoted to demonstrating best practices and fostering innovation in early learning and family support. Sited within the White Center community, it will serve as both a demonstration project and training center for those who work with children who are at the highest risk for school failure.

Come see how this Center is designed to provide the positive early experiences that young children need to grow up better prepared for school.

Program Outline & Critical Questions:
Sarah Weber with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will outline the research on the importance of early learning and describe the Gates Foundation’s commitment to supporting this phase of every student’s education.
1. Background on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation including its overall mission.
2. A description of the Foundation’s commitment to education including early learning.
3. What is the Early Learning Initiative and why are these first Early Learning Centers so important?

Bruce Hayashi, AIA will present his firm’s design solutions for the Greenbridge Early Learning Center and how it will fit in to the fabric of an emerging multi-cultural community.
1. How was this unique program developed to respond to the community as well as the important research goals of the Early Leaning Initiative?
2. What are some of the unique features of Greenbridge and how do they compare with pre-schools and elementary schools?
3. What are the ownership and operational structures of Greenbridge?
