2009 CEFPI School of the Future Design Competition

There is no other way to say it, than this is an amazing program and it's like a wildfire, if you stand too close you're enveloped. The spark spread so quickly through our Chapter this year, and Carlos and I amazed at the response from our CEFPI colleagues in getting involved. We first broached the subject with our members at the October Dinner Meeting. We had student representatives that participated in the 2008 Competition present, and by the end of the night we had personal checks from 10 firms totaling $2,000 that would be given directly to the teachers to help pay for materials and other supplies needed for the competition, but more importantly we had 20 architects and engineers signed up to volunteer with the student teams!

For their generosity in giving funds, we would like to thank Broadview Associates, Coughlin Porter Lundeen, Fsi Engineers, my firm of Hutteball & Oremus Architecture, Integrus, McGranahan Architects, NAC |Architecture, PCS Structural Solutions, Carlos’s firm, Sierra-Martin Architects, and the Robinson Group.

For their generosity in giving time, we would like to thank everyone who volunteered: Kristian Kicinski, Lillian Sabra, Ross Parker, Deborah Miller from Bassetti Architects; Melchor Beron from Berona Engineers; Chris Duvall and Alan Jacobsen from Coughlin Porter Lundeen; Noah Greenberg from the DLR Group; Cynthia Black and Claudia Yehia from Hutteball & Oremus Architecture; Michael McGavock and Jennifer Wedderman-Hay from McGranahan Architects; Leon Holloway and Robert Allen from NAC | Architecture; and Greg Eckert and Jesse Kingsley from Sierra-Martin Architects!

I could go on for pages and pages, so if you’ve followed up on this and have any questions or would like to get involved with the competition next year, post a comment or e-mail me or Carlos!

Enjoy the Pictures, there are several from our Regional Awards Ceremony that was hosted by Mill Creek Middle School in the Kent School District!

Washington Chapter Sponsorship

Craig Stauffer is the Chair of this year’s Sponsorship Committee and offers this report:

The annual Washington State Conference is approaching fast – June 3-5, in Silverdale.  In order for us to continue our tradition for successful conferences, we need help from our loyal sponsors.

While the conference offers many avenues for recognition of your contribution, sponsorships do much more than fund the quality of our annual conference. Sponsorships are the primary way we fund most of the work of the Washington Chapter throughout the year. Your support makes possible:

§  frequency and quality of our communications with members and regional associates,

§  improves programs at our regular tours/dinner meetings,

§  promotes School Building Week,

§  helps us conduct Spring Bus Tours,

§  supports participation of Chapter leaders in the Regional and International annual conferences and

§  funds contributions to research efforts by the CEFPI Foundation.

The Washington Chapter is a leader in the breadth of activities we offer to support educational planning and construction in our state and the connection we have to International programs and leadership. This trend continues, with Don Gilmore of the Seattle Public Schools currently running for CEFPI International President-Elect.

There are a variety of ways we all support the Washington Chapter with our time and our talents. Making a financial contribution is another. You get recognition of your contribution at the largest gathering we offer and through our regular publications. Please consider supporting the success of our Chapter by taking a look at the attached form and signing up for the sponsorship that suits you and your organization the best.

Please respond to Craig Stauffer with your completed form (email or fax). Further information is included on the form, but also feel free to contact him directly with any questions:

2009 Washington CEFPI Innovative Educator: Environmental-Based Learning Award

Take any group of kids, put them in a fantastic educational setting and think about the learning that would take place if teachers weren’t there… The Washington Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) recognizes that educators are the catalyst between great students and great schools. As a volunteer organization comprised of school district representatives, architects, engineers, and industry partners, the Chapter Board is requesting proposals and nominations for our selection of the 2009 Innovative Educator: Environmental-Based Learning Awards. Our goals are to empower innovative educators to influence teaching methodology and student-learning outcomes and to enrich our organization with greater awareness of the innovative delivery of curriculum.

The attached ‘Request for Award’ proposals form (and supporting material) may be submitted by Washington State educators or by others on behalf of a Washington State educator. Proposals are being solicited in the ‘Actual’ category must include curricular work that has occurred recently or is in progress and ‘Theoretical’ proposals must occur by the end of the 2009-2010 school year. Examples of environmental-based learning could include innovative use of a classroom, lab, break-out space, or school grounds; teaching and learning beyond the classroom; involvement of community partnerships; student internships; etc., for the study of math, science, art, dance, drama, literature, history, foreign language, or any other curricular or co-curricular program.

Request for Award Proposals must be emailed or hard copy sent to Nancy Josephson, Bainbridge Island School District postmarked by May 1, 2009. Letters of commendation or recommendation letters must be included. Award winners will be part of our Washington Chapter Conference, June 3-5 and must be able to commit to a 5 – 15 minute presentation at the conference in Silverdale, WA. Compensation for substitute pay and travel expenses will be provided. Nancy can be contacted at njosephson@bainbridge.wednet.edu.

A jury that includes at least one educator, one school administrator, one student, and one CEFPI member will review all proposals. A short list will be generated. Final election will include an interview at your school at your convenience. Awards winners will be notified by May 15, 2009. A total of $3,500 will be awarded for one to three proposals, at the jury’s discretion.

Thank you for giving CEFPI an opportunity to support innovative educators. Please think of an innovative educator that you know and given them an opportunity for much deserved recognition and support!
